About this course

The Certified Fire Inspector I training is based on the job requirements found in Chapter 4 of the
2014 edition of NFPA 1031, Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Inspector and Plan
Examiner. This course will help the participants to effectively perform their jobs, and along with
additional study, assist them in preparing for the certification examination.

The goal of the Certified Fire Inspector I (CFI-I) training class is to prepare fire inspectors for
certification based on the job performance requirements found in NFPA 1031, Standard for
Professional Qualifications for Fire Inspector and Plan Examiner. To accomplish this, the course
will familiarize the participant with: the development, incorporation, and use of fire related codes
and standards, the authority, jurisdiction, and duty of a fire inspector, the importance of code
enforcement in the overall fire protection of a community, and the critical components of the fire
inspector’s job and the knowledge they need to perform that job.

Course Objectives include

  • Illustrate the role and authority of the fire inspector in completing site inspections.
  • Select appropriate codes and standards given a fire protection, fire prevention, or life safety issue.
  • Determine the occupancy classification, occupant load, and type of construction for any given occupancy.
  • Inspect means of egress elements for compliance.
  • Determine the operational readiness of fixed fire suppression systems, fire detection and alarm systems, and existing portable fire extinguishers.
  • Evaluate hazardous conditions involving equipment, processes, and operations.
  • Verify emergency planning and preparedness measures are in place.
