The NFPA 101 Life Safety Code for Health Care Occupancies is a 3-day course designed to provide
learners with the knowledge and confidence to identify hazards related to life safety within health
care occupancies and accurately apply the code. Topics addressed include fundamental code
concepts, identification, sizing, and arrangement of means of egress, features of fire protection,
building rehabilitation requirements, special provisions, and operating features. A capstone
activity allows the learner to test their skills and knowledge by working through realistic scenarios
within the framework of a fully developed case study.

Course Objectives include

  • Explain occupancy classifications and how NFPA 101® requirements are relevant to new and existing healthcare environments
  • Reference provisions for components of the means of egress, fire alarm and suppression systems, and other fire protection features present in healthcare environments
  • Calculate occupant load and establish the capacity of individual means of egress components and the entire egress system
  • Determine egress requirements for patient and non-patient suites
  • Define and apply the correct criteria for rehabilitation work categories
  • Determine requirements for high-rise buildings and special structures, building services, and operating features
